Came up the week of 6/23-6/29. Stayed @ Walters cabins which is located @ the North end of the lake. Actually, I forgot how beautiful and peaceful this lake is, which is why I consider it one of12 my top 5. As Randy stated in the previous post - with the water level dropping, Bass are starting to move off the shore line and onto the shoals and main lake points. As they become more aggressive, they will bunch-up and compete for food, so It's not uncommon to catch 10-15 in one particular area, depending on the conditions and fishing pressure.
I really enjoy flipping plastics, which in my opinion, is the ideal technique to target big Largemouth. The algae bloom gets pretty bad on this lake and can almost happen overnight. Look for the clearest water possible and choose your colors accordingly. In that pea soup you'll need to use your blacks/blues but, if ya find some clear stuff, focus on green pumpkin/w black flake. In addition, I threw a Live Target frog @ sunset, and watching those monsters take that from under is the most exciting fishing there is!!! My 6 day total was around 250-300 with an average of about 2-2.5 lbs. Got a bunch of 4.5- 4.75 ers. My girlfriend got the biggest one on day 3. Go figure

Re: Report
Wow....great pictures and quality bass. I need to start fishing Black Lake more instead of the St. Lawrence. With two great fisheries side by side we are spoiled here in the north country. The wind I'm sure will keep me off the St. Lawrence soon. The largemouth seem like they are getting bigger in Black Lake. Years ago 5 and 6 pound largemouth seemed to be more common than in recent years. We'll see as the summer progresses.
Give a starving man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Randy....I'm extremely jealous that you have the luxury of both fisheries!!! I couldn't even imagine!!! Every spot I fished produced great fish Sun-Fri. The wind was actually pretty strong many of the days. Made positioning the boat very difficult, as you know. I used my power poles a lot and threw frogs in the bays when it was too windy. Saturday there was a lot of pressure (Buffalo tournament) so the bite slowed way down. Still got a few good ones in the a.m.
So I'd like to get together soon for a trip to the St. Lawrence if you have any openings... I was gonna call you during my trip last week to see if you wanted to get out and fish a little, but, figured you were guiding. Anyway, I'll shoot you a text next time i'm planning a trip up your way. We'll see if we can work out a date. Good Luck!

Every fish I catch is always carefully let go to fight another day. If everyone thought that way you might actually see some 6lb. bass in Black Lake.

Re: Report
I believe your philosophy may be reversed. I myself catch and release at black lake. 20-25 years ago our group that went up for opening week would get several right around 6lbs or better without the abundance of the 3lb fish...This year and several of the past years we have not even sniffed one close to 5. Its just my opinion but something has definitely changed at this lake over the years. 20-25 years ago tons and I mean tons of bass were being kept. I don't think u can hurt black lakes fishery by keeping bass...the only bass I would even consider keeping would be in the 15 to 17 inch range...and only largemouth...just my 2 cents.sakman33 wrote:Every fish I catch is always carefully let go to fight another day. Back on the original topic. That is some quality fish. Hats off to both of you. There are big fish in the lake, although if you beat the banks to death you might get lucky with one. You probe the right offshore areas your hands will get sore. Again very refreshing report and pics.

Re: Report
Capt. Randy would be better to discuss this subject that myself. He lives on Black lake and been guiding on it for years. In my opinion, I just feel that 6lbers are very few and far between . If you were gonna catch one...i feel Black Lake should be ur best chance.
