Dead fish

A group of us where up in mid September last year and we also noticed many dead fish, especially sunfish, bluegill and crappie and even an occasional bass. My memory isn't the greatest, but though we were told that what is killing of these fish would be killed off itself through the ice over. I'm hoping there is nothing more to this problem, has or had anyone else seen or heard of this. Just a concerned fisherman!
