Crappie fishing report may 19th-22nd.

First two days fished north and south sides of various islands. Attempted to get away from the crowded areas. Areas where the fish hadn't been periodically scattered by other fisherman or their boats. So, we concentrated in Conger island arm. Caught plenty of fish working the points of the islands. Rock & weed in 1-4 feet. Actually caught about 90 fish, kept 15 total but a few were bluegill or perch. Of the 75 crappie, believe 9 made the minimum length requirement. Hot lure and presentation was 1 1/2- 2 inch curly tail grub. Red/white. Cast and let free fall. Then slowly crank it in. Often when you starting reeling, the fish were on or would bite shortly afterwards. It was very time consuming measuring 75 crappie to verify they measured at least 9 inches. About 10 % were under 8 inches. A little over 10% were keepers and almost 80 % were 8 1/4 - 8 3/4. Even the majority of keepers were between 9-10.
As the days progressed the fishing increased in numbers and size. Believe the number was 42 but the size remained the same. Measuring practically each fish. This day it was the same grub that was productive. Put the measuring board away Friday night, with the concept that anything that appeared to be under 9.5 would immediately be tossed back. Luckily, later in the day we found some larger fish. Ended up with 27. Same grub and a three inch swimming minnow with silver flecks. Produced most of the fish. Found these fish in deeper water (8-10) on extended shoals with weeds. Sunday struggled first three hours, only had a couple keepers . Kept jumping around for new water. Made our way back to the main section of lake with camp grounds on western side of lake below Edwardsville. And located a school of quality keeper crappie on one shoal 6-8 feet with weeds ended up with 43 keepers. Same lures and presentation were predominate lure used.
It was funny to watch area fisherman that were fishing minnows with bombers watch us "tuna hauling" (catching a lot of fish) change to casting a jig or grub.

This is a special fishery. But if you are still reading you already know this. Maybe it's time to contribute to the lake and the people that work to insure the the future success of our fishing trips.
It's a simple suggestion but a heart felt thank you for taking care of and providing the continued updates of Fishing conditions. Become a member of the Black Lake Fish and Game Association.. It's simple (on line) and inexpensive. And a great way to say thank you. Food for thought.
This has become my biannual destination.
