fishing report 5-1 to 5-8

Post by Bob-O » Fri May 01, 2015 10:06 am

Hello all...in a few hours we will be leaving for the lake after a long cold winter. I will be posting by phone so the posts will be short and sweet. I hope to have the boat in and go out for crappie this evening. We are mainly looking for northern pike and the occasional walleye and look forward to a great week. The ice fishing guys did very well this season and hope it stays the same for opening day. This is our 14th season and look forward to seeing all the guys at camp.

good luck to all

Hi bob,

Went out earlier today in hopes of running into some crappie but didn't have much luck. Ended up catching one northern pike and a bunch of bass (catch and release of course)....any tips for crappie? Will be trolling for walleye tomoro... Thanks and good luck

Morning report is good. Weather is nice, not much wind. Water temp is around 58 to 60 and good clarity. We caught 12 pike on spoons drifting bays 18 to 23 inch. We caught a few nice perch and half dozen keeper crappie. We don't spend much time fish for crappie we just take breaks from casting. The crappie were caught in 3-4 fow on 1/64 OZ jigs tipped with minows under a bobber. We would anchor out from the wood line in bays like big bay and the south bay by Chapman's. Will let you know how the evening fishing is if its worth the report.

5-3 report.
Weather was perfect wind moderate out of south west. Water level is low devils graveyard is almost at surface. Water temp is 57 to 61F. We had maybe 6 pike today 16 to 23 inch all went back in the water. Crappie are scattered no real good numbers in any one spot a lot of shorts only kept 3 over 10 inches. Fishing was slow but the lake is beautiful. Tomorrow they are predicting thunder storms and high wind 16 to 35mph so will see how the afternoon turns out. Good luck to all.

Bob, the Northern Pike fishing sounds fun. Hope the weather is safe enough to get out today. Pike usually turn on prior to a big storm. Good Luck!

5-4
Water level still dropping. Temp is 57 to 61F.
Wind was strong from the south, rough water in the main channel. We boated 4 pike and missed a few more at the boat. Fished for crappie where we could due to wind. A few shorts and 6 nice perch. This is our morning. This evening we stayed in due to thunderstorm reports, the wind did stop with light rain and no thunderstorms. Tomorrow we plan on getting out early like 6am we normally don't get out till 8 or 9am it is vacation. Our neibour gets 50 to 60 in the few hours while we sleep so that's why we are getting up early.
Good luck

5-5
So getting up did not help us. No keeper crappie looked all over with no luck. Our neibour at camp says its the best year in a long time for crappie. Not for us but we don't know them that well. The wind was from the north in the morning and changed to west in the evening. Water temp is 58 to 65F. Water level is still dropping a lot. We did manage 13 pike today largest was 27inch and had to work for them. We did get two bowfin in the bays on spoons...never had that happen before.
Good luck.

5-6
Morning wind moderate from west. Water temp 58 to 69F. We boated 7 pike the largest was 30inch. Crappie are biting if you know what to do. Bobbers and minnows are out. Throw twister tails around rock ledges and rock piles with no bobber and slow retrieve and they hit. We boated 30 crappie this way with tips from friends and threw many more back under 10 inch. This evening the wind shut down and hot!
Good luck

5-7
Wind was moderate from west Water temp is the same as before. Water level is low, devils graveyard is now showing maybe a foot above surface. Hot on the water for this time of year. Pike bite was slow boated 9 pike largest was 22 inch. Crappie are still biting. Now for all asking about tips this is for you. We fished with 1/64 OZ jigs tipped with twister tails and cast into rocks and rock walls. We fished the south point of hog back and worked our way up to mid point between bowman island and did well. We fished off the north point of the island with the house on it between lonesome bay and hog back. Fish 100foot right in front of the house you will see rocks below be careful motering lots of rocks but lots of crappie. We also saw production around bowman and mutt and Jeff.
This is our last report for 2015.
Good luck to all..Bob-O out

Bob O.....Must have been you next to us at Hogsback. We did fairly well, too. I have always had great success using a #8 Caty football jig tipped with a 1" gulp minnow, below a Rocket bobber. Just let the waves rock the bobber and move it slowly back to the boat. We watched a group killing the big bullhead right in the middle of the afternoon in a small shallow bay on the south end.

Bob-O,

Thanks for the great report and the tips on the Crappie. We will be up the 16th fishing the north end of the lake. The pattern you are describing we did well on 2 years ago. I hope it proves that good again this year. I don't get a good enough signal to post from my phone, but I will try or do it on my return. I hope it will be as helpful as yours.

Tight lines.
