fishing report 5-2 to 5-9

Post by Bob-O » Sat May 03, 2014 9:15 pm

Arrived on 5-2 Friday afternoon. Target fish, crappie, northern pike, and walleye. Friday afternoon cold, windy the public launch dock is not in yet. Launched the boat at camp due to water is high and plenty of depth. Went out 6:00 to 8:00 pm after getting minnows. We landed about a dozen crappie and kept 6 in the 10” to 12” range, we also kept 6 decent perch. Water temp is 51F and the water is clear to light stain. 5-3 opening day morning, water was rough and wind strong from south. Fished 7:00am to 12:00am only managed 2 northern pike 20” to 22” water temp warming up a little 52F to 53F in the bays. We went back out 3:30pm and fished for northern pike and drifted all around, windy cold and rough. We only managed 1 at 21” and quit for pike and started looking for crappie. Fished the same place as Friday and nothing. We moved around looking for structure hog back and bay on southern west side on wood line, again nothing. The boats were stacked up in that bay like crazy. To close this post our neighbor with 30 years of crappie fishing only caught a few. I would have to say this has been the hardest opening day in 14 years coming here.

Still, fishing beats working.. Wish I was there .. Was thinking after the folding and debris and what not that it may take a little bit for the fishing to pick up. Thoughts?

5-5. water temp 53F wind from north, not too bad actually very nice chop and partly cloudy. Went out in the morning weather was very nice but no bite. We spooned for pike and only managed one 22" and no crappie at all. Went out for the afternoon and the bite picked up for pike 7 in the boat 20" to 24" then we hit a 33" and 31"! We came in early due to the live well was full so no crappie. What a great place, can't say what a great time we are having. 5-4 was a rain out for us did not go out and the water level came up a foot or so, the Indian river in Rossi was looking bad maybe ever more flooding.

5-7. Weather is perfect light wind from the north water temp 60F. Pike are biting but the crappie are not. The dock is now in at the public launch. Went under the bridge at edwardsville we had to duck not much room and the current is strong. Yesterday was the same story but the wind and rough water made it hard to fish where you wanted.

This was our last day and as always a great week. Wind from the north lake was rough. Water is between 55F and 60F. Pike bite is good but crappie was hard. We managed about 20 keepers. Erik they are not in yet from last year remember? The big pike caught were nothing like I saw before they were huge. If I can post a picture I will. They were fat a the heads were huge nothing like I saw before. Good luck to all
