erik wrote:Phil have you been fishing near black lake marine at all? I got some friends coming from buffalo soon and we weren't sure if we should fish in front of my camp or go over to roll away. Or if you have any other suggestions we are open to any and all advice!
Thx

I have not been there since early ice. Things slowed down and lots of folks fishing there; hard to get on one of the "spots" there now. You would have to get out there before light and get set up. I don't like fishing in a crowd anyways.
Rollaway has been decent for me. Just go up the lake and get away from the crowd.
Headed to Wheathouse to check things out in the AM, folks fishing there, but I need to see the ice for myself. Boats just cleared the seaway on the 30th, here, and the river is just about locked up.

January 11th. 50s and rain most of the day. Ice is 18" and doing well. Likely this rain and subsequent run-off will "loosen" the shoreline.

February 8th - 22" of ice. Snow is drifted and some spots/areas of slush. Tough walking. The pressure ridges are almost non-existent, easily crossed with any kind of machine or on foot. Lots of pickup trucks on the ice.
Fishing was s-l-o-w for us.

I guess with 22" of ice we do not have to worry about "Ice out" contest just yet

I don't really know, year to year average but it's a bit more than in the last several to many years. I can remember having to add an extension to my old Jiffy auger once - back in the 70s (more than 36") but that is only one I remember. Normally it's less than 20, I would say. I should have started keeping records years ago - but I didn't and still don't. Off hand I would say we have not had ice like this in over 20 years.
I'll ask around and see if anyone local has any information.

Hard pack snow over a little water in spots on top of 20-22 inches of ice, a little easier to move around on the ice, but the bite is slow as it has been all winter for me.
