St. Lawrence River Report - Labor Day Weekend

Here is a short video of our trip.

We have been fishing Black Lake for 10 years and finally decided to take the 10 minute ride over to the river and give it a try. Its a very very different fishery than Black Lake, but we had a blast and caught a lot of fish.

We wanted to find some pike and walleye, but the ridiculously clear water had the eyes down too deep for us to target them, at least with the equipment we had. I imagine the pike were down deep chasing the walleye.

So we switched to smallmouth fishing. We started shallow and quickly discovered that wasn't going to work. We kept working deeper and deeper until we hit the smallies on main-channel structure in 25-45 feet of water. We caught them on worm harnesses behind bouncers, on jigs, and with drop shots.

The fish were all fat and healthy and fought like absolute freight trains in the strong current.

It was a fun experience and we'll go back, but we won't completely give up on Black Lake. I think a four day trip with two days at each place would be about perfect.

Also, Alexandria bay is a fun little town with plenty of restaurants and even a bit of night life ... if you are into that sort of thing. We aren't.
