Sturgeon in Black Lake

Post by fishinmagician » Thu Jul 26, 2018 5:44 pm

During the first two weeks of the 2018 bass opener I happened upon a 4.5 Ft. sturgeon that had been hit by a prop. This discovery was in the Narrows, I have a screen shot of my Hummingbird map with an exact coordinates if anyone is interested. I called the DEC as directed by the Fish and Game commission regulation compendium. They didn't seem to interested in my discovery, they acted kind of like nobody really cares. I was sort of surprised at their attitude. I have pictures of this fish, I'm not sure on how to post a pic on this site, I would appreciate any help with this.

The DEC response was probably because they are no longer rare. They're jumping and porpoising all over the lake and it doesn't surprise me someone hit one. And some are really big. I'm still confused as to why the DEC chose this lake for them.
Give a starving man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

To Z-Nail, I saw in the fishing regulation book going back years it said they were in BL, but until this season I've never seen one or talked to anyone who caught one. Its a shame the first one I got to see was badly hurt and was just hanging on to life. It was as I mentioned in my original post hit by a prop, and it almost severed its tail, it also had several lamprey eels attached to its body. What a sad ending for such an interesting creature.

That is a shame about the sturgeon for sure. Ive been fishing Black Lake for years and have seem them jumping in that area also.I was fishing there this spring and saw a gar. I was kind of shocked due to the fact I have never saw one anywhere in the lake. ive never even heard anyone talk about them there.

Well, it fed some other predators, for sure. To make you feel better - the DEC stocked several hundred 10 -12" stergeon in the lake this fall. I was taking my boat out when they were getting ready to do the stocking.
Very interesting program.
They (the DEC Fisheries) believe Black Lake is an ideal habitat and environment for them to thrive.

Should be interesting to see how that goes over next couple years. Anyone know if the long nose gar are new or if they have been in the lake awhile ?
