Battery Maintenance

Post by ragincajun » Wed Mar 21, 2012 8:27 am

One of my trolling motor batteries won't take a charge. The other is fine and they are both about 4 or 5 years old. Is it ok to only buy one? Or will that be bad in the long run for the trolling motor or my experiences as a whole?

How often do you all replace your batteries?

Thanks. Only makes sense. Good to know my years of use are about right as well.

Rajin A Few things I forgot, is I take my batterys out of my boat,in the fall. We use them on our tv at hunting camp. After that I trikel them once a month for 24 hrs. That has worked good for me.

I just bought two car quest deep cycle marine gold batteries. Not name brand but they were pricey at $130 each. Their size are from the 27 group. 12" by 6.6" as that is the size of the battery boxes I already have installed in the boat. It says 200 @ 23. My old batteries were 175. I am pumped to have them, because just last season I bought and installed a mini kota fortrex that I only used a few short times.

This past fall is the first season when I was able to store my boat in my new heated garage. Which we kept at 80 degrees most of the winter. I guess our water boiler is a bit big for the space. So I left the batteries in the boat for the first year as I had taken them out all the previous years. I never thought to charge them throughout the winter though. I will next year, sounds like good solid advice, thanks.

if the battery wont take a charge.. um buy a new one. I never winterized my batts. Once there done they are done. trickle this. if you fish alot you charge them alot. If you store it , charge it first.

I have used AC Delco's for the past 12 years without a problem. My bass boat gets stored in an unheated garage. So I remove the batteries and throw the charger on them once a month. I fish a lot of tournaments, so I switch them every 4-6 years just to be safe.
